Recovery CDs when bought from 2nd Party
Recovery CDs when bought from 2nd Party
I bought my T41 from NewEgg.com about a week and a half ago. I called IBM today and requested the recovery CDs. I was told that because the ship date was 2 months ago I would have to pay for the recovery CDs. I have a problem with this because:
a) I bought the ThinkPad with WinXP Pro installed - Why am I now paying for the media which costs CENTS. I'd pay a few bucks for shipping but I think $40+ is abusrd.
b) I just bought the laptop a few weeks ago - why can I not just show proof of purchase to get the CDs. Should I ask NewEgg to request the CDs from IBM from me since they are the store selling the laptop?
I'm very frustrated - does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

If NewEgg is an authorized IBM reseller you should be able to fax a copy of your invoice to IBM. This should not only entitle you to the recovery CD's for free (if within 30 days of invoice), but it should also increase your warranty by a few weeks.

Anyway - that's not my point. Why do most people need a factory set. Why don't people (especially people who have been reading these posts for the last 6 months) just burn a set when they get their machines? I can see how a few people could accidentally screw up and delete the factory configuration without burning the restore disks - but it seems like poeple are doing this on purpose!

Did I miss something, what is the difference between T41 and T42? Isn't it possible to burn with RRwRR also recovery CDs of a T41?n3il wrote:That option is only available to T42(p), R51 and X40 owners. Sorry I don't understand it: of course you can burn an image of the hdd on cd with RRwRR- also on a T41.ian wrote:That's not what he is commenting on - of course you can install it - what he is saying is that the fact that you can copy (burn) the contents onto your own CD's is a new function, available since the release of the T42
So what exactly is the difference of the software of a T41 and T42?

Of course you can burn recovery CDs with RRwRR for a t41Chun-Yu wrote:With the T41 you cannot burn recovery CDs, but on the T42 I guess you can (I have a T41).

T41 -> can burn recovery CDs with preinstalled rapid restore 3.01, also available underChun-Yu wrote:Sure, but that requires a > 300 MB download. I'm talking about just what comes with the laptop. In that case, T41 -> cannot burn recovery CDs, T42 -> can burn.

T42 -> with preinstalled rapid restore 4.0, also available under

Are you absolutely sure that T41s come with that? I know for a fact that mine did not have the "Click Start, select All Programs, select Access IBM, click Create Rescue Media." option that http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55053 describes. (I am still on the original install of XP and it is most definitely NOT there).

Zeitgeist is getting confused with Rapid Restore (which can be used to burn cds which are a method to recover the image on the HDD at the point when the backup is created) and the option (only on T42(p), R51 and X40) to create the equivalent of IBM Recovery CDs to restore the factory image.

you seem to be the expert on this subject. What is exactly the difference between RR3.01 and 4.0 with regards to the creation of recovery CDs?
I used both programs- of course 4.0 is more comfortable, but isn´t the principle the same: both create an image which can be used for recovery CDs?
Regards, Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist: I've never actually used either, but from what I understand, the feature you are referring to takes an image of the HD as it currently is and saves it, so you can restore it at a later time. The "recovery CDs" do not simply restore an image, instead, they actually go though the process of installing all the programs again from scratch.
