Do you need to reinstall OS when changing MB&CPU on 600X
Do you need to reinstall OS when changing MB&CPU on 600X
Is it necessary to reinstall XP OS after doing a motherboard and CPU upgrade on a TP 600X (From a 2645-5EU to a 2645-9ZU)? Sometimes the OS will read the CPU core speed as 143mhz instead of 648mhz on A/C power. Would a OS reinstall fix this. This problem happens everynow and then. However, it doesn effect performance or speed then this occurs. Does anyone know. Thanks.

No. The incorrect speed is most likely due to the fact that your 600X is a speedstep model. Intel Pentium III with Speedstep change their speed to a lower, less power consuming one when switch to battery power. Windows will mostly read the cpu speed incorrectly (does this on my T21 and other speedstep computers I have worked on). If you are swapping MB & CPU, you don't need to reinstall Windows unless you want to. The only time you will need to reinstall is if you change the chipset. The 600E/X, T20/21, A20/21 all use them same chipset (as far as I know). I believe it is the 440BX Intel chipset, but can't remember right now.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Thanks for the answer
Your're right it is a speedstep CPU. I just didn't know that the hardware can actually throw off the OS like that. Thanks again for the answer.
FYI: On the chipset I do believe it is too the 440BX, I think the 600's took the 400MX - but don't quote me.

Incorrect CPU speed?
Recently got a used t43P.
Original specs say 2.26 gH CPU.
Sys Info now says 2.0 gH. Had MB replaced by Lenovo before I got it, but they say they didn't change the CPU.
Could this be a software thing?
thanks

Download and run cpu-z to confirm the CPU model. Post it here if you need assistance.
