Do X30, X31 and X32 all share common parts?

#1 Post by atx-88 » Wed Sep 26, 2012 3:22 pm

I have a X30 that I like to use for travel use but is showing its age so I am thinking of doing some upgrades. There is a X32 available locally with a broken screen and I was wondering whether I could swap the motherboard into my X30 or conversely swap my X30 screen into the X32.

BTW, is it correct that I would expect a big gain in performance and heat management going from an X30 to X31 or X32 which have the Centrino technology? I like the form factor of the X30 but it is slow when I multi-task and is really noisy and hot with the fan running all the time.

Thanks in advice for comments and advice!

You should be able to swap the screen from X30 into X32 shell. I'm fairly certain that the motherboard transplant from X32 to X30 is a no-go.

While there will be a performance gain, expect X32 to run hotter than X30 by quite a margin.

Good luck.

With that said, I wouldn't describe the X32 as noisy and hot. So maybe his X30 has some sort of problem, in which case the X32 might actually be an improvement.

Fair enough. X30 shouldn't run hot to begin with.

Thanks for the comments. The right hand corner gets uncomfortably hot to the touch with extensive use - my right thigh feels like it is getting a hot stone therapy massage - I might be unfairly critical as I usually use my T400 which is comfortably cool and quiet. I tried to use the RightMark CPU utility to throttle the CPU but it continues to run at 100% without effect. Is this a characteristic of the Tualatin CPU?

BTW, a strange problem I have is cursor drift when I use my browser to load web sites. The left-ward drift starts as soon as I click on a link and doesn't stop until the page is completely downloaded. This doesn't happen when I open apps like Excel or Word so I don't think it is hard disk or track point related.

I am using the X30 at the moment and the CPU temp is up to 70C and is feeling toasty.

Just a small note about X30 / X31/X32 compatibility, the parts are mostly interchangable, but the palmrest/bezel part is slightly different as the X30 has the USB port on the right. I had to do some minor X-acto surgury to fit my NOS X30 palmrest onto my X32.
