Prolonged Windows 7 performance deterioration - after 18 months

I have a few laptops from T400-T420 and of various equivalent brands. I notice the longer you use them, the worse the performance gets.

Eg. one of my main laptops is a T420 w/8Gb and Samsung 850 EVO SSDs... obviously it was blazing fast at the start but with over a years worth of fairly regular use it doesnt feel so hot.

I also noticed this on my desktops which is something like Xeon E3/E5 16Gb ram SSDs but obviously it takes longer to get them to a bad state.

I thinking this is just installing uninstalling crap and the registry etc. getting filled with nonsense and the interminable updates.

I guess this is Windows 7...dont try to keep them running after 2yrs. Just burn the lot down and reinstall?

Do you use software like CCleaner or Windows' own Disk Cleanup? SSD tweaks like periodic/weekly TRIM?

I have had no slow downs or other problems with my T510's or my T520 with the EVO 850 drive. All of them use Windows 7 Pro except one T510 on Windows 10.

I use CCleaner and several other maintenance programs regularly and have never had any sort of a slow-down.

2. We have a daily workhorse T410 with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and we observe no significant Win7 performance deterioration.
We use Samsung Pro-series SSD for above (1) reason, and for its Pro-series 10 year warranty.


BUT for good measure, what we did was this:
1) Did Product Recovery on T410
2) Fiddled Windows, Programs, and Desktop settings to exactly what we wish
3) ***Use Rescue & Recovery to save a snapshot image of your system, and revert back to this snapshot once every 1-2 years time. (Backup your data first!)

In general, if you install/uninstall many programs on your computer, Windows slows down and becomes slightly less stable, as the Registry does not fully revert upon (badly written) program uninstalls.

After a fresh install, I install several must-have apps and then image the operating system partition.

When the computer starts feeling sluggish, which is inevitable on Windows systems, I'll restore the image and install whatever apps I need that aren't already baked into the image.
