Has anyone built a custom refresh image?
Has anyone built a custom refresh image?
I'm using Windows 10, but I understand that it is available in Windows 8.
The things that I have seen online seem to suggest that it is an alternative or supplement to a system image.
Does it only reside on the disk? Thus not useful if the disk goes bad...

Re: Has anyone built a custom refresh image?
Yes, in a way I do and not necessarily restricted to Thinkpads only. On my critical machines (desktop and laptop), after setting everything up exactly as I want it, I clone the entire drive image as backup. Thinkpads recovery image is essentially a clone of the original image shipped from the factory. I don't want this because updates are still required, settings are not to my settings, and bloatware abound. System images are typically on the same HDD as the OS so yeah you lose everything if and when the HDD goes. Most manufacturer will allow/encourage you to make a cd/dvd copy of the system image precisely for this reason.

Re: Has anyone built a custom refresh image?
OK, I basically did that when i imaged this machine with Acronis TI 2011 onto a portable 2TB USB drive. I have the bootable Acronis CDs that I created back when i bought it, so all I need to "restore" it is a T61 with a blank HDD, a CD in the ultrabay and that 2TB USB HDD. That's how I made all my other T61 W7 setups and w10 test installs.
I used to be a fan of cloning, but the backup / restore is more flexible, Plus it keeps the original HDD Volume serial #!

Re: Has anyone built a custom refresh image?
I was referring to building an image that would be used for the Windows 10 create recovery disk option.
It is like creating a recovery disk when you first get the new Thinkpad, but it includes software that you installed later.
I understand cloning and have dome it with my T60, but this is a Microsoft approach.
