Thinkpad 701CS Error 611?

#1 Post by Medessec » Thu Aug 29, 2024 11:10 am

Hello! I understand it's been a long time for me, but figured this might capture some more experts for this particular problem.

I have a Thinkpad 701CS and I booted it up recently after a very long time in storage, and it had the usual 161/163 error. I took a brave pill and disassembled it, and actually soldered in a CR2032 to hopefully fix those errors. But the other thing is that even after a few power ups with power kept on it, it still retains this Error 611, and the Hard Drive and other devices seem to throw an error when I use the self-diagnosis.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else has also encountered this error, and if anyone might know any specific cause. I do plan on taking it apart down to the mainboard again, see if something's shorted, corroded or if there's other visual damage.

Appreciate any help!

didn't see similar issue on my TPs before but according to your description I'd start with the south bridge.

Medessec...

According to my HMM's, error 601 shows as a floppy disk or disk controller error...however, it also shows all the 601, 602, 604, and 6xx errors as all being related to drives or drive controllers, which would include your 611 code.....did you by chance have the floppy drive attached, or is the hard drive acting up?

Just a thought!

Regards.

Dave

Edit... 611 specifically relates to timeout-drive error.

Appreciate the response. I did see that about 6xx in the HMM, but it is nice to know the specific notation on 611.

I removed the motherboard and looked all over on it and couldn't find any obvious damage. I happen to have two 701 Hard Drives, tried both and the 701 behaves exactly the same. Error 611, can't load or see the HDD and going into the self-diagnosis, it throws an error trying to test the Parallel, PCMCIA and Infrared. The self-diagnosis simply can't see the HDD at all to test.
