FS: 2 Lenovo ThinkPad laptops: R400 (7440-WGG) & a T400 (2768-BN2) for parts/upgrades (with Pictures) $75 USD OBO

I am having to thin my collection, the monumental list of projects on my workbench, and need the cash for other projects I am offering up 2 Lenovo ThinkPad laptops:
- R400 (7440-WGG) running Windows 10 x86 Enterprise LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel)
- T400 (2768-BN2) for parts/upgrades

The R400 works great, and I had grabbed the T400 for parts to upgrade/fix the other. I have been using the R400 on my workbench for testing and wiping hard drives/SSDs; and it has worked great for my needs. I really like the feel of the keyboard, the system is responsive on Windows 10 x86 Enterprise LTSC and with Linux Mint. You can get Windows 11 installed, but with the max 8 GB of RAM the experience is frustrating at best (at least for me). The WiFi and ethernet connections both worked fine. The internal firewire 400 (IEEE1394a AKA iLink) is slow, but a Firewire 800 PC Card addressed the slowness issue. I also picked up a cheap USB3 ExpressCard which worked wonders for moving files and testing drives via my USB dock. Note the PC Cards & ExpressCards are not included.
This R400 has a Core 2 Duo 2.26 Ghz processor. There is a little bit of damage to the heat sink and the frame near the VGA port (Hence the reason for the T400 detailed below).
In this R400 I upgraded:
- Upgraded the BIOS to the latest version, dated 10/2012
- Maxed out the memory to 8 GB. Note if you read the ThinkPad communities that this model is finicky with what brands and configuration of memory that will work.
- Swapped out the spinning rust hard drive for an Intel 160GB SSD. Booting up is speedy fast now with the SSD.
- Replaced the failing DVD MultiDrive (DVD/CD-RW)
- Installed a brand new (aftermarket) battery, which works great.
- Currently running a fresh install of Windows 10 x86 Enterprise LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel)
- Has Office, Visio, Project, LibreOffice, and a ton of open-source applications and tools installed
The R400 is ready to use, just create a new user ID & passphrase and encrypt the local drive with Bitlocker. Windows Devender is active and running, so if you wanted a different endpoint protection that is up to you. Also there are Powershell scripts out there you can leverage to further harden and ensure a higher level of privacy if you wish.

The T400 (2768-BN2) I picked up intending to swap out the lid, heatsink, and frame for the R400. Upon boot it has beep codes since there is no memory installed. The T400 is missing the multidrive, the hard drive/SSD mounting bracket and cover, and the memory. Thinking about it, you could pull the 2.8Ghz processor from the T400 (2768-BN2) and upgrade the R400 if you wanted.

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns regarding the item or conditions of the offer, please feel free to send me a message. For everything pictured and detailed I am asking $75 USD or Best Offer (OBO). Will consider all reasonable offers - I would rather have you benefit from having this in your home than sitting in my garage or it going to ewaste.

I can meet locally within the SF Bay area. I can also ship & use PirateShip (having sent things to folks in the vintage computer communities I also lurk in), though only stateside so far.

Happy to contribute back to the community that has provided me so much with this hobby/addiction – thank you!
