T-23 and maximum memory
T-23 and maximum memory
I just upgraded my T23 - 256meg to 1 gig of PC133 memory because I wanted to eliminate having to use a pagefile that suffers from a slow hard drive. Both the new 16 chip 512meg modules I bought are identical but when I use both in my T23, screen refreshes are real slow and it seems to take forever for applications to start. Aside from the slow stock hard drive, this T23 was real snappy when I used 2- 128meg modules.
I tried every possible combination of memory insertion but the result is the same, faster performance when using just one 512meg module. I have the most current bios installed too.

sounds like those ram modules might be PC100 instead of PC133.

UPDATE! I replaced the seemingly defective PC133 ram module and after a few minutes, my system really slowed down, just like as before.
Now I've heard that there are two types of memory available for a t-23, low and high density. Mine have 8 chips on each side for a total of 16 chips and I have heard that this is a high density configuration. I also heard that there are also low density memory modules with 4 chips on each side. Yet I have not been able to determine whether you need low or high density ram for 1gig on a t-23. As it stands, my t23 runs fine on a single 512 16 chip module but doesnt seem to like 2-512 16 chip modules.
Who knows what the correct configuration for t23 memory?

Well, I just got a PC133 512MB stick which has an "IBM Approval" sticker on it, FRU# 19K4657 and 8 chips per side (16 chips total), so I don't see why 2 of them would pose a problem.
I wonder if there's some other difference between the sticks, synch v asynch, for example (I don't even know if PC133 SODIMMS come in these flavors, I'm just throwing out an idea)
