Ok, so after endless hours of command line config, I have Ubunutu (Dapper Drake) running smoothly.
Last nite I was reading through endless pages of command line code configs and running them sepretly, to make sure Ubuntu saw my PCI devices, installed ATI graphics drivers etc.
Ken (College housemate) came back today and told me of a Sys program called Automatix which is an auto-install script (using command line). everything was installed in minutes.
I had to mount the NTFS XP partition (which i have 200mb left, XP is ready to crash, reason for a new HD needed). So because of this I am staying away from XP for about a week.
I copied all my .mp3s from NTFS to my new Linux folder and imported them easily.
Flash was a [censored] to get working via command line, so I installed from Automatix. easy cheesy. Now that I know how to config Ubuntu Im sure I can do it again in a short amount of time.
I glad I dumped SUSE 10.1, it was such a pain in the butt esp with YAsT (yet another setup tool).
So I hope I have everything right as far as programs etc. Still have XP Pro on my T60.
I like it so much I may install it on my T60 soon enough..
Basic sys specs:
Gateway from 2001
ATi
Audigy 2Zs
Basic P4 @ 1.6
768 RAM
80GB HD

only problem i had with Automatix is it did not install flash correctly.
What i did was removed all traces of flash from Synaptic Package manager (ie the libflash-mozplug)
download flash from Macromedia/Adobe
Unziped it somewhere, then cd into that directory and ran
sudo ./flashplayer-installer
I followed all the promptes and makesure you install it to
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox <-- or where ever you installed Firefox, Dapper installs this in that location.
After that your done and up and running with flash inside firefox.
Workes everytime, and playes all videos like Google Video, Youtube and so forth.

As for now, ubuntu was the simpliest distrib I tried on my t40p, and have to say it work flawlessly (sound, network, gfx and all) without any special configuration.
After installation, system is configured with right resolution, cpufreq installed etc.
IMHO, it was far painless to install than standard debian or gentoo.
The only issue I have now is that I can't boot with the laptop docked (Dock II), the system freeze during initialization, I have yet to work arround this issue.
Just to let you know.
