System Restore problem
System Restore problem
On my LENOVO 3000 N100 laptop running Vista Home Premium SP1,
I tried to do a system restore a few days ago and got the following error message:
The disk SW_Preload (C:) has errors.
Windows has detected file system corruption on C:. You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.
Clicking on Check the disk for errors goes to check disk options > Start
Windows can't check the disk while it's in use. Do y ou wantto check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer.
I click on Schedule disk check errors and the window disappears. So I close everything up and reboot.
The laptopo reboots normally and goes to the logon screen. I log in and I can see hdd activity, but nothing tells me if it's checking the disk.
I have done this numerous times and I still cannot do a system restore, even though the system restore app shows current restore points.
So, I can I really check the disk for errors and correct whatever problems it has?
TIA

Re: System Restore problem
Just curios, why'd you do a system restore in the first place? If you have a HD issue, a system restore probably won't help. Did you try running HD Tune?

Re: System Restore problem
I was trying to do a system restore because I had lost my network settings. I have since fixed that problem.FredGarvin wrote:Just curios, why'd you do a system restore in the first place? If you have a HD issue, a system restore probably won't help. Did you try running HD Tune?
I can't figure out why Windows system restore won't work.
Not running HD tune. I did run Lenovo Tool box diagnostics and it said everything was fine with the HDD.

Re: System Restore problem
I don't know if this will solve your problem since you have disk errors, but I have had better results running System Restore from SAFE MODE.
If you have a dual boot system with XP, when you boot into XP it will erase your Vista Restore Points unless you disable the Vista partition in XP. At least this is true when XP is on one drive, and Vista on a second drive.

Re: System Restore problem
If that’s what happens it isn’t checking the disk. The disk check happens before you log in. Click “Help”, search for “check your hard disk for errors” and follow the instructions to check the disk. The laptopo reboots normally and goes to the logon screen. I used to be an anarchist but I quit because there were too many rules

Thank you. I will try this also.

Re: System Restore problem
I had a coworker where check disk only worked in SAFE MODE. This was a Dell with Windows ME.

Re: System Restore problem
Still haven't been able to run chkdsk. Yesterday I tried this:
Yhttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130824-chkds ... -vista.htm
in Safe Mode. When the computer rebooted in safe mode, a blank windows help and support window popped open blank and the computer did nothing else.
So then I tried this.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978 ... mmand.html
I generated a text file according to the instructions in the tutorial and there were numerous files that it could not repair.
I guess since a system restore is out of the question, I am going to have to do a re-install.
Thank you all for your help.

Re: System Restore problem
You might try running a manufacturer's diagnostic. Pick what's appropriate from the list below.
Hitachi Drive Fitness Test
Fujitsu Diagnostic Tool and Erase Utility
Samsung HUTIL
SeaTools for DOS
PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD - ThinkPad

Re: System Restore problem
Thank you for the Hitachi link for Drive Fitness Test.
However, after reading the user's guide, it states that it supports all versions of Windows up to XP. Do you know if it makes a differnece with Vista?
Thanks again for any information you can provide.
