A disk read error occurred

Hello, I just reinstalled Windows XP on a ThinkPad T40, and everything went fine, until I restarted after getting updates. It boots up to the IBM ThinkPad splash screen, the is says "A disk read error occurred, Press Crtl+Alt+Del to restart" :??: and Windows XP won't boot up. :help:
IBM ThinkPad T40
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
1GB RAM
34.2GB HDD

Thanks for the info, but I ended up reinstalling windows xp, and that fixed it. :D
