It wouldn't affect the warranty according to Lenovo's policy, although the processor itself is not under Lenovo's warranty.

To be honest, I did not use this laptop that much.
The best I can tell is that quad core processor is way much faster than dual core one. And Sandy Bridge quad core is good at temp and power control, so the thermal system on T420 is fairly enough to handle this monster, and idle power consumption is pretty much the same compared to dual core model.
