Windows 8 installation hangs on X220
Windows 8 installation hangs on X220
Hello,
I have some problem trying to install Windows 8 Pro x64 RTM on my X220. I've downloaded the official ISO from MSDN and copyined to a bootable USB stick. When booting from the USB, the Win8 splash logo is displayed but then it freezes. Restarting the PC, I can sometimes get it past the logo (it's very rarely, 9/10 times it hangs), and the installation starts and completes until the first reboot. When rebooting to continue the installation, it hangs again at the splash logo, this time booting off the SSD, not the USB as before.
Have you heard about this issue, or got any ideas about how to solve it?

It seems to work without problems using the x86 version. Any ideas?

Re: Windows 8 installation hangs on X220
I installed 64-bit Windows 8 successfully on my X220 from a burned DVD via a USB connected external DVD drive. Install went smooth. Haven't installed any OS from a USB stick to know what issues may arise by that method.

Having the same problem
Lenovo X220 (4290R47) with Intel X25-M 160 GB (SSDSA2M160G2LE) and 8GB RAM.
Stops during start of Windows 8 and stays there paused forever.
Updated BIOS to 1.29a for win 8, still the same problem.
Than, updated BIOS to 1.33 and still the same problem.
Also trying to upgrade firmware for SSD but intel tool has nothing to update because it is last version.
Also installed all win 8 beta drivers from Lenovo Drivers win 8 beta page, but that didnt help eather.
I did 4-5 installations of Win 8 x64 RTM (Enteprise and Pro from MSDN) in different combinations but no luck.
When win 8 starting is working, than it I can restart 2-3 times in row. Than it stops and there is nothing I can do.
Also when is working it is booting windows and restarting windows extrimly fast
commpared to Win 7.
I have filling that this have someting with SSD but cant test it with othat HDD now.
Btw never had any problem with Win 7.

At the moment I'm running the x86 version without any problems, so it could be a problem with the x64 version of the disk driver, or the firmware maybe.

Re: Windows 8 installation hangs on X220
Tommy, I did something last friday.
I disabled USB UEFI BIOS Support in BIOS/Config/USB.
In BIOS/Startup is this:
- UEFI/Legacy Boot: [BOTH]
- UEFI/Legacy Boot Priority: [Legacy First]
Than I installed Win 8 Ent x64 from DVD that is in docking (so no usb).
I had 30 restarts since than and it is almost looking good.
2 times it stoped, but after power off it was OK again.
Hoping this will be OK, or I should go with UEFI option recomended on Lenovo Forum form Windows 8.

Sounds decent. Regarding your last sentence, what are the recommended UEFI option, and do you have a link?tvatavuk wrote:Tommy, I did something last friday.

Re: Windows 8 installation hangs on X220
Thanks. After changing to UEFI Only (before it was set to both Legacy and UEFI) I couldn't boot from my USB stick. I reformatted it as FAT32 and made sure that I didn't use the USB3 port to boot from. This made it work, and I've been running Win8 for a day now without any problems.
