My T400 just has 2GB installed now and I have a 160GB 5400 RPM drive installed in the Ultrabay, for the stuff I would be putting on it (music samples) 5400 is too slow, and 160GB is too small So I was going to do 750GB 7200 RPM.. BUT I have my ram issue only 2GB so should I get 8GB or do the hard drive first? At the moment I'm not storing anything on the drive yet.
Sitting idle I have 1GB free
You know what I'm just going to do 4Gb now and if I find I need more I will add more and add the memory to another system that way I can get the hdd and the memory.
Take a look at our

larger hard drive or more memory?
Re: larger hard drive or more memory?
There is very little difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm hard drives. The memory would definitely be a priority in this case. What OS are you using?

Re: larger hard drive or more memory?
I'd vote for a small SSD in the main bay and replacing the optical with a hard drive using the caddy.
ThinkPad L14 - 2.1GHz Ryzen 4650U | 16GB | 256GB | 14" FHD | Win11P
ProBook 470 G5 - 1.6GHz Core i5 | 16GB | 2.2TB | 17" FHD | Mint

Re: larger hard drive or more memory?
Already have a SSD as the main and a temporary 160GB 5400 in the Ultrabay.ZaZ wrote:I'd vote for a small SSD in the main bay and replacing the optical with a hard drive using the caddy.
Re: larger hard drive or more memory?
I'm using Windows 7 64 I know about 4GB + only works on 64 bitjayton4 wrote:There is very little difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm hard drives. The memory would definitely be a priority in this case. What OS are you using?
Now as for the drive speed I assume most here just do small tasks but when you are running live music from large 40GB samples that are stored on a 2nd hard drive you need a 7200 drive unless you like drop-outs.
I'm not too sure how many here do music or digital audio but low assess time is key!
