Earliest P series laptop that will work with M14 Thinkvision
Earliest P series laptop that will work with M14 Thinkvision
Question is as subject. I currently have a pair of P50 on hand. I'd quite like to play around with the Thinkvision M14 but can't seem to find any sort of info confirming yay or nay on if the Thunderbolt 3 connector on it supports this. The controller data sheet implies it can do both DP over USB-C and PD but unsure to the exact specifications (Alt mode and PD2.0) What is the earliest P series confirmed to support the M14? If I have to I can sell the P50's and look at a newer model.
Lenovo (unsurprisingly
) haven't been forthcoming with that information. Anyone here know either way?

Re: Earliest P series laptop that will work with M14 Thinkvision
We are using ThinkVision M14 units in this age of home-office...
1. For the Workstation series, M14 would work for any of the ThinkPad workstation class introduced since Summer 2018.
ie: ThinkVision M14 would work with P1 (1st Gen), X1 Extreme (1st Generation), P52, P52s, P72, and onwards.
2. M14 require DisplayPort 1.2 Alt Mode (this is a must), which runs over what looks like a normal "USB-C cable".
For ThinkPads supporting Power Deliver 2.0 (ie: above models mentioned in (1) above), you only need this single cable to supply both power + video signal!
Hint: Do not lose the supplied "USB-C" cable (supporting DP1.2 Alt Mode + PD 2.0)!
3. Our X1 Extreme (1st Gen) can run two units of M14, morphing your ThinkPad into a 3-monitor setup!
4. We also use the Docking Station 40AN0230UK which also came out summer 2018, specifically for supporting above models mentioned in (1).
This 40AN0230UK also support M14!

Re: Earliest P series laptop that will work with M14 Thinkvision
Hi
Stumbled across this forum while researching upgrading my P50 to an NVME SSD and noticed this thread.
I have an M14 Thinkvision monitor and have had no problems using it with my almost 3.5year old P50.
With respect to cables I have a second cheap generic usb-c cable for the road which works perfectly as well. Just make sure that you get one which supports 4k video and a high enough data rate. https://www.ple.com.au/Products/628712/ ... C-1m-Cable
Hope this helps
Cheers
