TPM 2.0 Firmware

#1 Post by MikalE » Thu Aug 05, 2021 12:27 pm

Is there a firmware upgrade from TPM 1.X to 2.0 I'm not able to find for the T520 Thinkpad?

I've looked all over and don't seem to be able to locate one except for Enterprise use on a network and not at all certain if it is even for the T520.

I believe this is what is stopping Windows 11 from upgrading on this machine.

Hi, I understand there may be some computers in existence somewhere which support both TPM 2.0 and TPM 1.0. On such a system BIOS update can in fact do an "upgrade" from TPM 1.0 to 2.0. However on regular systems such as T520 only one version of TPM interface is supported. And unfortunately this is 1.0

In my understanding some workarounds are needed to make Win 11 run on a T520: some hacks on Win11 level. Another option is to install Ubuntu and run Win11 inside a virtual machine. I'm doing it with Win10 and performance is so-so. For one thing you can't give all CPU cores to the VM. So if you have just two you can only give one to the VM. I'm also using an external USB audio card for glitch free sound.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll wait awhile and check around again in 3-6 moths. Someone will undoubtably come up with a TPM hack and eliminate the 8th Gen Intel requirement to load and operated Windows 11 on an unsupported machine.

Don't bother. Is there really something you can do on Windows 11 that you can't on Windows 7?

Yes, I can't run the dumba$$ tax sw on W7 any more, but it runs on w10, so I keep one W10 system running.
W11 can go the way of winblowswME or winblows8

We all know WIndows 7 is modern enough to do anything at this point. Write to your software developer and ask them politely not to drop support for older versions of Windows "just because".

I doubt there is a technical reason for the supposed incompatibility. More like the developers were ordered to target the new compilations for Windows 10.

To work remotely in my case means to use specialized software to connect to a virtual machine at the company I'm providing services to.
That software carefully checks which operating system I'm running and which antivirus software is present.
The specifically require very latest virus definitions to be installed or else they don't allow me to connect.

Do you think they can really be persuaded to allow me to connect from an operating system that has not been receiving official security patches for over a year?
It is very much on purpose they are not allowing this.

Other software vendors might just be saving money on quality assurance.
Running QA on a smaller set of operating system versions must be quite a saving for them.
Will they listen to our pleas?
Probably no more than I'm inclined to act on the wishes of a mosquito which accidentally flew into my room..
