T430 throttling with 90w charger

#1 Post by ranixon » Sun Oct 23, 2022 6:20 pm

I have a Thinkpad T430, it has an Intel i5-3210M and no dGPU. For some reason, the CPU doesn't go more than 1.19 GHz. I repasted it with an Artic MX-4, changed the chipset thermal pad (for an Artic one), cleaned it and the temps looks ok. The BIOS is the lastest one (2.82). The 90 W charger works well with my Thinkpad X230, reaching 3.2 GHz with no problem. It happen with or without battery (the battery isn't geniune). Is it a normal behavior or is a problem? AFAIK, it should be able to reach 2.50 GHz at least with the 90 W charger.

I'd say that you have a bad battery.

The EC in the xx30 checks if a battery is genuine, if not you can't charge it (but it might still work if charged).
You can bypass this EC-check via a mod, see this: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=120776
Even then a bad battery will still throttle the CPU.

Should the CPU throttle without the battery? I will try the EC mod anyway

Without a battery the CPU will also throttle.

I did the EC mod to disable the battery check and still throttling. Looks the I will have to buy a new battery. I will comment here if I do it and the problem is solved.
