How to fix T410 no boot device issue

#1 Post by Mel222 » Thu Jun 29, 2023 8:02 pm

I got a BSOD - didn't see what it was, and the screen went black and I didn't get the option to "restart normally". I powered off and rebooted, but I got the "initializing starting link" screen, and then it told me Cannot Boot From Device. It showed the boot order and each one said no device found and no valid operating system. I have never changed my boot order, so I assume it's set to the default. In case it's helpful to know, the order is: USB FDD, ATAPI CDO, USB CD, ATA HDDO, PCI LAN, USB HDD, ATA HDD1.Also, I use the laptop plugged in vs. battery, if that matters.

The machine was pretty hot, which has been an issue off and on since I've owned it (for past 9 years), but after I let it cool down, I still could not get it to boot.

T410
Win7 Professional OS
32-bit
Intel SSDSA2BW120G3
BIOS version 1.25

I know it's an old machine with outdated everything, but is there anything I can try to fix this?

Thanks!
Mel

Sounds like your SSD has died.
It could have been overheating already for a long(er) time.
Hopefully you made a backup...

Yeah, probably right, unfortunately. :(

During the Initialization Setup Link, it tells me Media Test Failure, check Media Cables. I had tried to reseat the hard drive (all looked good and clean in there), but that didn't help. I went through all of the steps to take in this event too, but short of reinstalling Windows 7, which I've no disk for, nothing worked. I do have all of my personal files and photos backed up, but haven't done a save in a while.

EDIT TO ADD: I did click on the HDD Diagnostics in BIOS, and it shows the results as "pass". So not sure if that is promising or not.

I would unplug the SSD and connect it to a different PC (using an eSATA enclosure or SATA-to-USB), see if I can access the data, copy anything crucial, then run a disk check in that other PC.

Could try booting to Linux, which does not need a drive, and see how it goes. 120gb drives, if that's what you need, are fairly inexpensive and you could return it if that isn't the issue.

@dr_st, thanks for the suggestion...I'll look into trying that and see if I have any luck.

@ZaZ, thanks for your suggestion too. Not a bad idea to just buy a new drive and see if it works.

Well, probably better to check if you can put it in another System and see if it works first, just to be sure. USB External HDD Enclusures are CHEAP AF!

I think your drive died. Replace it with a new SSD, it should do they trick.
About the overheating issue: replace the Thermal paste of Your CPU and GPU and clean the fans and heatsink. Oh, and try to not use it in your lap or your bed. Put it in a flat Surface like a table or something like that.

Yep, overheating system kills the SSD Memory, but not the controller, in particular.
