mSATA to NVMe adapter

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Sun Oct 20, 2024 10:17 am

I am looking for a mSATA to NVMe adapter, but all I can find is mSATA to M.2 but most say don't work with NVMe. I want NVMe as it is the only SSD you can find in any electronic store. I don't see M.2 or even mSATA SSDs, only standard SATA or NVMe.

You have a computer with an mSATA slot, and you want to use an NVMe SSD on it, correct?

Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

NVMe SSDs use PCIe, which is fundamentally different from SATA, and AFAIK there are no chips that can convert a SATA link to PCIe. You have to use a free PCIe slot (Expresscard works too) for NVMe SSDs, though you won't be able to boot from them (no NVMe support in BIOS).

Please refer to section (4) Expansion Card Physical Form Factors and please clarify what you want to be converted to want.

§ Definitions

(1) SATA. Storage bus logical interface.
....(a) mSATA. "Mini SATA" Physical form factor.
........(1) Generation 1. Shares physical form factor with mPCIE 56-pin, 30 x 51 x 6mm.
........(2) Generation 2. Shares physical form factor with mPCIE B-Key, 22 mm wide. Also known as NGFF and M.2 "M Dot Two".
....(b) Micro SATA. "Micro SATA" Physical form factor commonly known as 1.8" SATA.
....(c) 2.5" SATA. "Two And A Half Inch SATA" Physical form factor.
(2) NVME. "Non-Volatile Memory Express" logical storage interface using PCIE. Shares physical form factor with mPCIE M-Key M.2, 22 mm wide. Also known as M.2 "M Dot Two".
(3) mPCIE. "Mini Peripheral Component Interconnect Express" expansion bus logical interface.
........(1) Generation 1. Physical dimensions 56-pin, 30 x 51 x 6mm.
........(2) Generation 2. Physical dimensions 22 mm wide. Also known as NGFF and M.2 "M Dot Two".
(4) Expansion Card Physical Form Factors
........(1) Generation 1. Physical dimensions 56-pin, 30 x 51 x 6mm, used by mPCIE Gen 1 and mSATA.
........(2) Generation 2. Physical dimensions 22 mm wide, used by mPCIE Gen 2, M.2, mSATA, and NVME. Uses keys roughly correlated to the intended interface and use of a particular expansion slot slot. Refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#Form_ ... and_keying for more information on keying.

Better yet, just mention which particular Thinkpad model you're using and we may be able to point you to the right SSD to use.

You could replace the wlan card with an mpcie to m2 m-key adapter. You would likely need to remove a mpcie whitelist however.

The ssd can only be sata.

Found an mSATA SSD: https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-KC600-2 ... B08ZNSNL1K
May be pricey for its size though.
