Thoughts on ThinkPad T15p Gen 3

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Mon Oct 21, 2024 8:35 am

What is everyone thoughts on a ThinkPad T15p Gen 3. If I would buy a new ThinkPad it maybe a P series or a T15p Gen 3. I don't know if they stopped at Gen 3. I like to have a ThinkPad with the normal AC power jack and not USB-C. I watched a video of how many ThinkPads get trashed or sent in for repair due to the USB-C port getting broken or wear from pins getting bent. I am still on my T470 and never had problems with it but talk to people who owned T480 and newer about the port being easy to break. Plus it is soldered in. But eventually I will need a new ThinkPad that supports windows 11 official and the T470 doesn't.

I would be wary of user reviews. They tend to be fans or haters, but not much in between. People with a complaint are more likely to be vocal about it than most buyers, who are happy campers, but don't post about it, so it makes it seem like a bigger deal than it is in reality.

There's also plenty of videos showing how to install Windows 11 on the T470 if you're happy with it otherwise. As a general proposition I'd favor AMD over Intel and it looks like the T15p isn't offering AMD. You didn't say much about what you want or need, other than something new eventually, which makes it kind of hard to help and it kind of sounds like this will happen down the road, so perhaps you should ask when you're ready to buy.

It is just for when I want to upgrade to a newer ThinkPad. I can install windows 11 but it isn't officially supported on Gen 7 cpus. I like to have full upgradeability such as 2 DIMM slots maybe 2 NVMe slots, CPU is out as it is soldered. WiFi is what ever but would like it slotted if it dies. I don't think any ThinkPad since T480 has removable battery anymore but internal still accessible to replace. And power jack I like the square as if it gets damaged, easy to replace over USB-C. But as of right now I am fine on my T470 with Windows 10. Just looking for future options.
