Another dead Thinkpad A21m

#1 Post by IBMR60 » Thu Oct 31, 2024 12:52 pm

I was powering on my A21m this morning when I noticed that the backlight was dim and a squealing noise was coming from the machine, then the backlight brightened up a a second as the noise got louder right before it shut down. Now when I plug in the laptop it doesn't take a charge, and when I have it on battery power the cpu fan starts and all the lights come for a brief moment before it powers down. I tried taking the battery out and running it on just AC it doesn't do anything, won't take power from the adapter. I don't have a multimeter on hand to test the power supply at the moment. Hoping someone here knows a bit more than I do lol. Thanks in advance!

After disassembling the machine to see if anything blew up (fuses, stuff related to the backlight), I didn't see anything that looked out of place. re assembled the machine, plugged in the power supple, and it turns on, but is giving me a beep code (it is partially reassembled, likely something disconnected). But it stays on now!

Idiot me forgot to put the ram back in, i put a stick in and she came to life. turns out it was a power supply problem, the supply I was using was dead, and the battery only had enough power for a about a minute or 2. I guess I need to learn not to panic so soon

Eh, it happens to the best of us. Congrats that your machine is working well after all!

A2x is one of my favorite Thinkpads, just for the look. Glad to hear another one is still chugging along.
