Shocking redesign: ThinkPad laptop without a TrackPoint! Lenovo ThinkPad X9 leaks out

Lenovo appears to be doing it: On the new Lenovo ThinkPad X9 series that leaked out on Twitter, the Chinese manufacturer is seemingly killing off the famous and iconic red TrackPoint.

I am no longer interested in Lenovo laptops anyway, but just two years ago Lenovo promises: TrackPoint will always be present on ThinkPads :D And it got these half sized cursor up/down keys too. The last useable laptop keyboards are those in gaming models. Back to PC or external keyboards

Better late than never. This was all the rage on the subreddit including our resident Lenovo employee constantly pinning posts about it to gauge sentiment from people who would never buy it anyway. There’s no FOMO from me or any other faux-rich folx for this piece of trash.

It’s a ThinkPad in name only like the X1 Carbon Gen 2 and the Z13, another misguided attempt by our Communist friends to innovate without substance, yet as usual, the attempt is lauded by the same peanut gallery who shilled Wubuntu and anything else outrageous. Such is the Business of Media.

This too shall disappear. They would do better to partner with Sabrina Carpenter or Sydney Sweeney next time they try to sell something no one actually wants for nothing else than trendiness.

I can't say I'm shocked. And then Epicurus said, if it does not have a TrackPoint, then why call it a ThinkPad?

As far as I'm concerned, that's an Ideapad/ThinkBook with the wrong badge but on it. It's silver, looks nothing like a ThinkPad, has a generic keyboard with square keys, lacks the TrackPoint obviously... It just looks like your average modern laptop - looks like it could literally be made by anybody if not for the badge on it. Zero brand identity or unique style. Most unfortunately, this is the trend that all the manufacturers are following. You can't tell them apart without the logos anymore.

I don't necessarily think it's a problem for the rest of the "true" ThinkPad series unless this trend expands. We'll see I guess.

It's not the first Thinkpad-branded trackpointless laptop. There was also the 11e.

On mainstream models the trackpoint will probably stay for a few years, then slowly fade away.

Since about 3 years I have gone "full-mouse" (Logitech M330 Silent Plus).
I don't use the trackpoint and have even disabled the trackpad.
And I have never bought a new laptop, so it will be a very long time before I would even notice something like that.

A ThinkPad without a TrackPoint, is not a ThinkPad

This was inevitable ever since Lenovo started destroying ThinkPads with the X240. That was the beginning of the end: shallow chiclet keyboards, crippled layouts, internal batteries, and now they’ve finally crossed the last line, a ThinkPad without a TrackPoint! This is not a ThinkPad; it's just another soulless, generic laptop with no identity and no history.

Lenovo promised that the TrackPoint would always remain in ThinkPads, yet here we are. They blatantly lied, and now they’ve killed off the last piece of design that made these machines legendary.

If anyone still cares about ThinkPads, now is the time to speak up! Go to Lenovo’s Instagram Trackpoing removal post here: (https://www.instagram.com/lenovo/reel/DF7-gFRxH1m/) and let them know what you think about this disgrace. Complaining here isn’t enough, they need to hear it from the fans directly.

RIP ThinkPad (1992 - 2025).

The unfortunate truth is that most TrackPoint buffs are dinosaurs. Myself included, of course.

If I had a $ for every time I had to answer questions about the little red button to my younger and genuinely curious friends, I'd likely be able to afford a new ThinkPad myself...

Not that I would want one, but nevertheless.

In all fairness, I'm somewhat surprised that it hasn't disappeared already.

I had my first experience with the trackpoint a few months ago, and it honestly took until I bought my X60, which has not trackpad, to really start using it. It's really good once you get used to it, but the trackpad is definitely more intuitive to use.

It feels like trying to balance on a bicycle almost. I can see why it would disappear, and at this point I don't really care because I don't care about newer laptops anyway - feels like they're all evolving into macbook clones just like we're apparently all evolving into crabs.
