Restored A31p with no sound - driver issues?

#1 Post by wujstefan » Sun Apr 20, 2025 5:31 am

Hello all!

One of the systems I have always loved and finally grown up to rebuils is an old beloved A31p.
The thing is, I'm struggling to get Audio and Video drivers at their feet. Phillips WDM pops me an error code 31, and Crystal WDM audio codec an error code 10.

W2K preload is running, installed on 64Gb M2 SATA SSD.

Tried a gazilion different drivers, approaches and methods; starting with preloaded software and ending with all kind of website-based knowledge and drivers. I believe you folks have lots of experience with those devices, so would be more than grateful for help :)

Im sure youve tried the official audio driver https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad- ... tp1gnt.exe

You can also try the driver intended for T42/R50/etc. https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad- ... a241ww.exe

Isn't it an Analog Devices chip? At least, Thinkwiki says it does.

My go-to approach with this is to boot with another OS, usually Linux. If it works there, then it's a Windows driver issue. If it doesn't, it's probably a hardware problem.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Well will try to do this, albeit AFAIR it did work on WXP

EDIT: trying to install soundmax drivers for windows NT I do get a "Configuration or hardware problem occured" message though.

Have you installed any of the service packs for Windows 2000?

You must've used an A30 driver instead of A31. A30 and A31 have completely different sound cards, I learnt that the hard way.
But if you want to make absolute sure it's not something else wrong, see if under BIOS setup if you cluck a bunch of random keys does it beep
Dell Lat CP MMX-233 64mb 40gb W2k
600 PII-266 416mb 40gb WXP
T23 PIII 1.13ghz 1gb W7
Precision M4300 X9000 8gb 160gb WUXGA Ultrasharp fp W10
T530i 15.6" i7 16gb fp W10
UXGA:
A30p PIII 1.2 1gb W7 (IDTech)
T43p 2.26 2gb fp W10 (Sharp)
Lat C840 P4-2.5 2gb 60gb W7 (Ultrasharp)
