T550 M.2 2242 SSD as primary boot disk?

#1 Post by blang88 » Sat Jun 21, 2025 10:35 am

Hi everyone,

I have an old T550 that I'm going to dust off and use as a 2nd pc however I want to give it some upgrades first. Most important is to change the HDD. It's currently using an old SATA HDD as the boot disk but it came with a small 16G M.2 2242 SATA6G SSD that Lenovo was using for Express Cache. If I buy a larger M.2 2242 SSD to replace the 16G one, can I use this as the primary boot disk? If so, can anyone provide advice on how I can do so?

Thanks!

It should be as simple as setting the boot order in the BIOS...
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T16 Gen 3 (21MQ), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Ok cool, just wanted to make sure there was no strange mechanism that might prevent that controller from being the primary boot disk.
