T440p Core Power Limit..?

#1 Post by Barkermush » Wed Jul 30, 2025 4:16 pm

T440p..I7-4800mq..GT730 Version.

While monitoring with HWInfo I noticed that it frequently exceeds the Core Power Limit, but it's doing this at around 28w CPU package power.
It was getting really bad benchmark CPU scores, so I changed the thermal paste and the temps are perfect now.

But my CPU benchmark scores were still really bad, and I noticed further down in HWInfo that I'm regularly exceeding the core power limit.. while the CPU package power shows 28 to 32. Isn't the T440p supposed to have a limit of 37w?

I'm guessing this is the reason my CPU benchmark scores are so bad? The Laptop came reset with a fresh Windows 10 install, so I installed driver updates with the 'Lenovo website automatic scan and update' feature.

But in the power plan settings, I only have one option available 'Balanced(recommended)' there are no other power plans. I can create a new power plan 'High Performance' Which I did, and I checked the advanced settings, and it looks correct:

'Intel(R) Graphics Power Plan
On Battery: Maximum Performance
Plugged In: Maximum Performance'

But when using this power mode, I'm still exceeding the core power limit and get really bad CPU benchmark scores.

The average score on CPUZ for the 4800mq is: 6184 multi thread and 1584 single thread.
While I'm getting 1598 multi, and 325 single.

I've tried downloading 'Power Management' drivers from Lenovo, but whenever I try to install, they tell me I already have the most uptodate drivers.
I believe I'm on the latest Bios, as the Lenovo update app updated the Bios.

Is there some setting I am missing to change/fix the Core Power Limit? Or is the Core Power Limit that I'm getting correct, and I am misreading it altogether?
Eitherway, does anybody have any ideas on how to sort out my VERY low CPU benchmark score.. thanks.

1. Did you monitor the CPU clock speed while running the benchmark?
2. Does your T440p have a working battery?
3. Are you using the 135w charger?
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

You have nVidia discrete graphics GT730.

The i7-4800MQ has a TDP of 47W.

You are testing with integrated graphics settings.

I monitored the clock speed just now while bench marking, they went to 3,696.3Mhz. Which is about normal, right?

Yes it's got a working battery, it's in 'fair' health if that affects anything.

No, it came with a Lenovo 90w charger.

Ah, my mistake sorry. I double checked, and the CPU Package Power is reaching just under 47w during the benchmark (still low scores)

This is from earlier, while just under light load.. literally just using Firefox:

As you can see, it's Exceeding Core Power just doing that, while the CPU Power Package shows at only at 20w.
It just seems to be constantly exceeding Core Power Limit, is this normal?
