Better graphics on recent linux for x61t

#1 Post by thinkpadrobert » Sun Oct 26, 2025 1:40 am

A few years ago I thought I might use my old x61t as a kodi machine, then along came kodi 19 with its fancy new graphics system and everything lagged, didn't matter whether I was on windows or linux. Now I have discovered more recent linuxes have greatly improved performance, equivalent to how it felt back on kodi 17. I tried kodi 21 on ubuntu 24.04 and libreelec. I don't think it's just kodi 21, since even google maps street view running on chrome is fluid, to the point where it's feeling like a usable machine again. I've installed waydroid on ubuntu and it's working pretty well too.

Has anyone else found this?

I'll have to dig up my X61 and test it (maybe in the coming days). But I remember it running well under Debian 10, but the graphics performance took a dive with Debian 11 and 12. I suspected it was due to Mesa, but have no solid evidence for that.
