X210 - non-working microphone, help needed

#1 Post by tadec » Wed Feb 03, 2021 9:35 am

Hi, first time posting, hope i followed all the rules correctly. I recently purchased a secondhand X210 and today I found out that the internal microphone doesn't work, nor the external mic on my earbuds plugged into the headphone jack port does (the headphones do however). I emailed the seller, but I am pretty sure that he either didn't have this problem or wasn't aware of it and would've told me otherwise.

I am thinking I somehow [censored] things up on my end because I am not a particularly experienced user. I am running the stock 51nb AMI bios+linux with the latest kernel, which I think should support the device OOTB.

lspci lists this audio device:

Code: Select all

Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio (rev 21) (prog-if 80)
        Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 7270
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 32, IRQ 140
        Memory at 2fff020000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
        Memory at 2fff000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
        Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel, snd_soc_skl
When i plug the headset into the headphone port, pavucontrol says that the Microphone port is "plugged", but it still doesn't work. Alsamixer also detects when i plug in the mic jack.

I previously applied these viewtopic.php?f=80&t=129796 bios settings for PCIe for power management reasons, but I don't think I tampered with the BIOS settings otherwise. For what it's worth, the same problem persists when I try in Win10, but it's a very unmaintained installation. Persists when booting from a live EndeavourOS USB too though.

If it was just the internal mic not working, i would've dismissed this as a hardware issue, but since the jacks act strangely too, I am thinking that might not be the case.

Hope someone here had encountered similar issue and managed to solve them!
All replies appreciated, thanks.

What sound card daughterboard are you using? Check if you have the X201 one. Using the X200 daughterboard with X210 motherboards can cause serious compatibility issues.
X61HK (8250u, SXGA, 16+512+1t, macOS)
T4200s (10510u, 1080p, 16+256+1t, macOS)

Code: Select all

 1 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0x2fff020000 irq 139

Yes you need to open up the laptop and see if its an X200 fru or an X201 one.

If my X220 experience is anything to go by you would love an external USB sound card/microphone in your webcam/Jabra USB headset.. Microphone input works but USB devices somehow work better. UCA 202 does a nicer job of pumping sound out too compared to built-in. Regrettably UCA 202 can't work with a mic w/o a pre-amp, I think I should have purchased a UFO202 instead. I'm under Ubuntu BTW, zero trouble with drives for Logitech webcam and UCA202.

yeah, thank you, I thought about that too at first, but now that I know that at least the jack is ok, I am not in a hurry to solve the internal mic problem.
